Hold on a second here Herb. John is it a Penzel or Penzel Muller. I have both these clarinets, I'm not sure what the model of the Muller is though it's a full 7 ring with the articulated G#. I'll have to agree that this clarinet is bad. It would be great if it wasn't for the C# which is badly out of tune, due to the terrible design of putting the vent on the tennon. Otherwise I would consider this a great horn as the sound is very focused if thats your thing.
On the other hand I have a G. Penzel Pacemaker that was made In Germany, though it does say New York under the Penzel name. It's stamped "Germany" just above the register key. I'm not sure the age of this instrument. It has a small bore, quality silver plated keys, and the coolest and most comfortable thumb rest design I have ever felt on a horn. This instrument sounds very very good. Clear and open it the throat and dark and mellow from the lowest to highest note. It is a bit sharp, but who cares if your playing jazz.
You have to try the instrument, don't fall into the label game. Sure companies have reputations for good or bad quality, but I have played some mid range horns that when set up are every bit as good as a pro clarinet. Well maybe not the Rossi's or Eatons but they all have there own voice and you will find many gems out there that are often over looked because they aren't "Designer" horns.
