I'm doing a project for a global history class (at least, i will be, if my teacher agrees to this topic. he coaches the jv football team, and probably doesn't even know what klezmer is...not to stereotype jocks or anything. okay, no more tangents.) comparing the music in "fiddler on the roof" to traditional klezmer music (as in, its authenticity), and was wondering if anyone knew of a website comparing the two, or had anything to say on this subject. i figured it would be a fun project, and i'd get to listen to a lot of good (clarinet) music!

It would be much easier to discuss the authenticity (or relevance to reality) of the stories in "Fiddler" rather than the music. A brief look at "Fiddler on the Roof" in my search engine reveals a lot of stuff about that. Maybe you should change your topic, and if you do, be sure to look up "Sholem Aleichem".

A comparative study of the show music vs klezmer would require you to have an understanding of the modal structures of both, i.e., a lot of theory, as well as delving into history of each tune.
OTOH, delving into the history of the tunes might not be too hard. Plug them into your browser and see what comes up. If there's enough, then you may have your paper.

Does anyone know who played the clarinet in the soundtrack of the film?
I've always thought it sounded terrific

John Denman played the clarinet solos in the movie version (w/ Isaac Stern) of Fiddler on the Roof.
