It would be remiss to pass over Sidney Bechet, arguably the original master jazz clarinetist from 1920's New Orleans. He eventually swithced over to the soprano sax and made that his instrument of choice, but he certainly started on the clarinet.Many of the great jazz clarinetists and saxophonists of the 20th century, such as Johnny Hodges and Bob Wilber were influenced and taught by Bechet.
