I am new to tarogato; just yesterday bought me a Gregus Pal model from Budapest. I find that I have problems getting the lower register without jumping up an octave. The most difficult seems to be the low E. Of course, there might be a leak, but a blowing and suction test on the upper joint makes me feel that it is rather air-tight.
Experimenting with the embouchure, I notice that spreading the lower lip as broadly on the reed seems to help.
I also notice that the mouthpiece table is wider that the reed (I have tried various Bb clarinet reeds -that what I understood should be used).
Any ideas?

I think that when one's used to clarinet, any conical bore instrument (Tarogato or Sax) makes octave jumps until one's used to the different (more relaxed?) embouchure.
Took me some days not to jump up on my sax...first I thought it was a leak, too.

I know what you mean. I play alto and tenor sax sometimes, and after a longer pause there's always the problem with the lowest notes. That's certainly also part of the problem with my tarogato. I guess that the small mouthpiece makes me automatically assume a clarinet embouchure.
But there might be a more particular problem with the low E, which appears to be more prone than other notes to break up an octave. I am not sure, but it could be that the upper C pad is not always sealing properly. I'll have to keep an eye on it.

Have you tried Soprano Sax reeds? On my tarogato they work much better than clarinet reeds.

No, not yet. Actually the instrument has been to a repairman since June to be checked when he has time.
But meanwhile I have tried a soprano saxophone for the first time (I have played alto and tenor saxophones and the clarinet) and I realize now the difficulties that seem to result from this physical shape. The position of mouthpiece was quite critical, otherwise I had problems in exactly the same range (around low e) than with the tarogato.
The repairman also suspected that the problems may be related to the mouthpiece. But I'll have to see when I get it back.
