Dear all,
I'm moving to Estonia for three months to accrue playing and teaching experience, and I'd like to explore Estonian folk music. Does anyone know anything about Estonian clarinet playing?
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Tom

I wish I could help you Tom!
I do know that some Finns play folk music on clarinet. The usual repertoire is waltzes and schottisches, humppas, polkas, and other couple-dance type stuff. I also know that they, in "the olden days," played primitive clarinets made from rolled birch bark. The relation here is that the Finnish and Estonian languages are very close, but I have no idea about their folk music!
Keep us posted if you can once you're there and enjoy!
All the best,
Katrina

I'm from Helsinki, Finland. Unfortunately I don't know much about Estonian folk music, let alone clarinet playing there. I remember hearing that vocal music, big choirs, is very prominent there.
About the Finnish folk music using the clarinet, I found a rather inexpensive recording of many typical pieces, you can find it here http://www.levyvirasto.net/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=44&products_id=850
best regards
Hannu
