 Hüsnü Şenlendirici

Has anyone here been paying attention to Hüsnü Şenlendirici and his band Laço Tayfa? They have recently put out a second CD and it is quite excellent. I believe it follows in Turkish and gypsy styles.

Hi Carmen,

yes I met him personally. He played on my cousins wedding together with Vassilis Saleas. He´s awsome. This as the same music I play.

I have all his CD´s. There´re actually 3 CD´s.
Two with Laco Tayfa and one Solo Album.

1. Laco Tayfa - Ciftitelli
2. Laco Tayfa - Hicaz Dolap
3. Hüsnü Senlendirici - Hüsn Ü Klarnet

I have a Video with him where he´s playing over 10 hours on the wedding.

A few days ago I visited my local Turkish supermarket in east London to buy some fruit and spotted a CD with a picture of a clarinetist on it and, as it was not at all expensive, I added it to my trolley. This morning I have started to listen to it for the first time - I'm listening now - and I was so surprised that I've come straight to the internet to find out some more about the artist, Hüsnü Şenlendirici. And here, straight away, is a post only a few days old about exactly the same person. The CD I bought is called 'Hüsnü-ü-Klarnet', and is recorded to a high quality, but of course it is the playing that matters. This has been my introduction to the Turkish clarinet and I think I have been very lucky to stumble on something with such appeal.

Is he playing an Orsi G Albert clarinet? Looks like he has a mike on his barrell for most of these videos.

These videos presents Mr. Şenlendirici playing in a variety of settings: with a small combo, with a large orchestra, live, and in a recording studio, playing solos, and doubling with other lines. He is cool and professional, even when his mike isn't setup beforehand he can.

I think he has a great sound, and real rapport with his audience.

Wish I knew how to get a sound like that, or play quarter tones with fluency. These elements of clarinet playing are not in western culture.

@ Noel: YOu should get the other CD´s aswell. They are a MUST if you like this kind of music.

@ Ginny: Well this is your opinion. You probably don´t play and dislike this kind of music.

@ Ralph Katz: Are you german ? Let me know becaus I´m living in Germany.
How ever, he has no Barrel Mic. I´ve met him a few times now and he´s using a hearing aid. Nothing else. I´m using them, too.

And no, he has no ORSI Clarinet. The clarinet he recorded the first two albums with was a " HAMMERSCHMIDT & SOEHNE " G clarinet in german system. He has now an " AMATI KRASLICE " clarinet. But he and many other clarinet players like " SERKAN CAGRI " still say that the HAMMERSCHMITT clarinet has the best sound.

And this is true- I have a " G " Clarinet in Boehm System from " HAMMERSCHMITT " aswell and it´s the BOOOOOOOMB !!! :-)

I play everything they play and you can reach such high registers .. I tell you .... this is unbelievable.
And now I can blow the exact same sound like Vassilis Saleas. This is not a joke, too. This was a very very hard time to practice, to practice, to do experiments for me to find it out but finally, I got it.

Fanatic,

Sorry, but I'm in the US (, but I do work for DaimlerChrysler, if that is any consolation.)

What you say doesn't surprise me: the Hammerschmidt's that I played on some years ago were excelent instruments.

Tell me more about the hearing aid - I am fascinated. How is it connected? Is there any particular style or brand which works best?

Regards,

Ralph

Hi Ralph,

in this case you have to try a few of them.
You have to go to one of your local Hearing aid shop and ask for " Pocket Hearing aid´s ".
This is how they look like:

http://www.oticon.dk/eprOtiScripts/Files/encyclopedia/images/Body_worn_hearing_aid.jpg

The only thing you have to do is to drill one of your barrels. Some are taking a screw with a little hole through it and drill it into the barrell. Some people are just drilling the barrel and fit the aid with tape or whatever.

I prefer to drill a hole in the barrel through one side that big as the hole in the hearing aid. Then I use a snap gring. You have to measure the size of the snapring and use a drillbit of the size of the snapring and countersink it on the surface on the same place so that the snapring can fit by pressing. It must fit good. YOu can fit it also with superglue in the case that you messed it up.

As for the cabe you have to cut the cable and connect the cable you wish to connect in the Mixer, Amplifier, wireless set ort what ever, by soldering.

The hearing aids are not that expensive and it´s alsways the best choice.

Try it and you will see.

Fanatic,

OK. But the picture does not appear to have an external microphone, only an ear piece. Where is the microphone?

Thanks

I've only just discovered Husnu Selendirici on youtube as well and I'm in love - he is so expressive! Have ordered his "Joy of Clarinet" CD from overseas and am now fascinated with Turkish/gypsy music.

There's a good write up on Husnu at
