The Ethnic Clarinet

has anyone else tried these for ethnic cl.??? Just got one yesterday...expected to hate it (even though I *hate* dealing with cane reeds, which is why I reluctantly decided to try it)... I ended up liking it alot, but not sure yet if it will become my reed of choice.
I put it on, no pre-wetting at all...expected to not get a sound out of it, but to my surprise it played like a dream immediately (I got a student 2.5, pro 2.25, and 2.5...have only tried the student 2.5 so far...using a V.B40 mp).
The tone was the big surpise...I imagined it would be bright, or buzzy...but it is very mellow... much more so than the cane Rico and V. I have been using.
Some notes on my cl. now seem much more strong and full sounding, yet others seem a little weaker, and flatter...mostly the throat-ers...but it is not a radical diff...just a bit, which I think will clear up as I use it more.
Looking forward to trying it more over the weekend, and hearing from anyone else who has used them.

i practice and record with legere - similar remarks as to the warmth.
i use a pomarico crystal mpc and rovner lig.
when i play live, i use cane because i find i can play longer and louder
than with the legere.

I only play Legere reeds...I play Balkan and other assorted Eastern European stuff. I like 'em, but I think that's cause I'm in Minnesota and the humidity (or lack thereof depending on the month) is so difficult to deal with!
When I had a lesson with Ivo Papasov, he said the Legeres "have no tone." I don't know exactly what he meant by that but he seemed to like my sound on the Vandy B45dot I was playing at the time...
I know other Bulgarian folks in Bulgaria love them....but these guys play really really soft reeds anyway, and the 2 or 3 I brought the guy in Bg who gave me lessons were too hard for him. I sanded them down a whole lot for him...lol!

thanks for the input... I have now played on it for a few more days, and have tried the 'pro' 2.25 reed too. Surprisingly, the pro seems brighter... but not sure if I like it better or not.
I like the reed...not sure I *love* the sound, but it is still real good, and alot better than a cane that wont play at all!
So I guess the thing I like the most is just the simplicity factor, which is huge to me...I also play violin, and many times I would sit to play the cl. and a reed that just recently seemed fine, for some reason wont make a sound...I get mad, and put up the cl. and get out my violin...haha...now no excuse not to practice the clarinet!
Do the guys using the really soft reeds all use super open mp's? It seems hard to imagine you could play the high notes otherwise...

Yup, beavertoof, the Bulgarian dudes almost exclusively play on Vandy 5JB mouthpieces, and usually with Rico or Rico Plasticover 1-2 reeds...

A 1 !!! yeesh!!! I would not think a sound would even come out...hmmm...I'll have to try that, even though I kind of like the 'cleaner' sound of a less open mp and somewhat stiffer reed... I do have a 5jb... ok, you got me thinking here...
