I've always wondered if i should play the Flute or the Clarinet but all my friends have said i should play the flute because they think it sounds nicer and is easier to play BUT of course theres always blowing witch is hard for the Flute. So i'm really not shore can you help ?????????????????????????????????????????? .............................................................................................................................

both instruments have their perks. flute takes a lot of air and air support. clarinet takes less air, but tought embouchure muscles for the reed. do whichever instrument you like better. you'll get bored and frustrated on an instrument you don't want to play. try out both instruments before you rent or buy. and whichever sparks your creativity and feels like the instrument for you, go for it. if you rent and you find you don't like the instrument after a while playing it, take it back and switch with another instrument. hope this helps.

Thomas, when you are hungry, you do not have to ask your friends what you are craving, right? You know what you are desiring to eat.The same is with music or an instrument.Thomas needs to play what will make him happy, but most of all please play from your heart by playing the instrument that will allow you to express your feelings.That is what music is all about.Being able to show a side of you that others can admire and appreciate.So Thomas if it is a flute you really want to play do it.If is a clarinet that will bring the best out of Thomas by all means play the clarinet.Because one day,someone will hear you play and will get "goosebumps" because you were playing from the heart.All because you are playing the instrument..............Thomas loves!

well...i didn't really know i was going to play clarinet when i got my first instrument...by i play it fluently. and i made the right decision....u like it if you understand it better and dedicate yourself to it...i dunno what im saying but if u do...then hip hip hooray

Why ask us? Don't get me wrong, we are here to help ppl with music questions. But this is one question only Thomas can answer. We can't tell you what to play, or even suggest. We can tell you <b>about</b> each instrument, but <b><u>NOT</u></b> decide for you. Definately Rent both and check out which one you like. Good luck, tell us what YOU choose! :D

I agree mainly with everybody except KT. I personally love the clarinet and that's what I play but you SHOULD play what makes you feel good and helps you express yourself. I'm not a big party-goer nor do I enjoy most social type things people try to pressure me into but I can "party" with the clarinet. Everybody loves to listen to me play a crazy dance and stuff like that. I may not dance but I can play one which is pretty cool and I get EXCITED about it which entertains people because I'm usually quite boring but ya'll probably don't care to hear anymore about me.Blah,balah,blah.blah!

You should try both instruments and see which one fits your embouchure. Also, I have a strange theory that the instruments we play match our personlities to some degree. Which do you think goes with your personality better, clarinet or flute? Last but not least, which one seems to feel more natural to you to play?

I have to agree w/ KT on his recent remark about the instruments matching our personality in some sort of way. Like some people in my cass say that they played the clarinet and they said it was boring and hurt their teeth. I think they didn't like it because they choose to play it just because it's a popular instrument and it's not their personality to go with the group, but to stand out from it. I hope i'm making sense!(And i'm not trying to make you not choose the clarinet)

I myself think you should play the clarinet. It might be hard at times but the flute has requirements like thin lips that can blow into the horn. With the clarinet it's challenging but you will have lots of fun learning. Clarinets also have nicer sounds in some situations. Just think about what instrument YOU want and not what other people want you to play.

Well thomas... I play both flute and clarinet, and not only does your personality have to fit the instrument, you must have a desire to play that instrument or you will bore very easily. Now you also have to take into consideration which style of music you are interested in playing. For ex... the clarinet is much more suited to play jazz and is well known for its amazing concertos and popularity with leading roles in foreign sounding music. Now flute on the other hand (my personal fav. of the 2) is much more suited for modern and easy listening music, also the flute was and still is the most popular instrument in European music... and the piccolo (which you will learn after a few years on flute) is extremely popular in marching, military and American music. Not only are the styles of music you play important, your embrochure (the position of your mouth when playing) is extremely important... you have to ask yourself... Do I wanna play an instrument that requires a reed and a very firm embrochure on the sides of my mouth, or do i wanna play an instrument thats needs no reed and takes more air than any other instument to play? No considering these aspects you have to ask yourself one last question... Do i wanna play clarinet and have the ability to easily learn the saxaphone, or do i wanna learn the flute and stay within that category (not that you cant leave the flute family, its just really hard at first) ex. Piccolo, flute, alto flute, and bass flute. I hope this helps you and which ever instrument you decide on im sure you will LOVE it as flute and clarinet are in my opinion two very elegant and nice sounding insruments once you are firmly established.
