Advice on buying an Alto Sax...
Author: Joseph
Date:   2004-03-16 02:59

I have being playing the Alto Sax for about 2 years and I was thinking of buying one.. I saw one at my local music store and it plays perfectly fine.. the reason I need advice is because I think the price is too cheap to be true.. it costs $450.. I'm not sure if it is a good deal because I think that Altos cost way more..

Yes, that seems too low a price to me as well. Where is the saxophone made? If it is made in China, don't touch it! There may be good saxophones made in china, but I've never come across any. Chinese instruments tend to have poor quality pads and key mechanisms. What ever way they are shaped, they produce an awful sound.

What you have here is a bottom of the range student model. If you've been playing already for two years, you should aim a bit higher. I haven't bought a new saxophone, but I think you are talking about at least $1,000 for a decent one.

Is it used? I find all sorts of *competent* used student instruments at that pricerange.

What is it's brand?

Respectfully, it's rare that a 2nd year player knows a decent instrument from a masquerading wall ornament. Did you test it against a digital tuner? Have an independent technician or experienced player along to verify it's suitability/durability/playability?

Never tried a Bandnow. 'Bundy' is a trademark of the Selmer USA company. Bundy's are middle-of-the-road student instruments that are rugged and inexpensive. They are quite popular (meaning technicians and instructors are familiar with them).

Bundy is a respectable student instrument. It is not likely to be any better than what you've been playing for the last two years.

Depending on how far you want to take your sax playing i would say dont buy anything under $800. Im from Australia but good quality instruments would never be prised at $400. Some advise dont but a brand new horn as they take time to break in. A hint check out pawn stores like cahs converters etc as you might be suprised at what you'll find. EG i know some one who bought a Selma Soprano Sax in great condition includeing a Vandoran mouth peice and a gig case for $300. So keep your eyes open.

I have a Bundy model very much like this. It's about 8 years old now and it still plays beautifully. It's a good horn for a beginner. I didn't have any problems that were out of the ordinary.
