I have the same problem w/ my t. sax it's a yamaha too it's like the come out of no where i'm not sure what it could be but polishing mines seems to help the scraches less noticable.I think temp. MIGHT have something to do with it or maybe it's the kind of brass the company uses is easily scratched because i've noticed while in band that other sax players have different color brass.Hope this was helpful.

According to technicians I've spoken with, laquer can't be applied like that to cover blemishes and scratches. I'd imagine that's because it's normally applied like spraypaint and it would be practically impossible to apply evenly onto the marred surface. Such lacquer would have to be matched to the old and the presence of solvents from the new lacquer would disturb the old. The resulting mess might be worse than the scratch, according to my understanding.

The only way to reliably restore a lacquer finish is to commit to a complete relaquer which will require removal of the old finish, the smoothing of all dents, and any physical blemish that remains will not be hidden in the least by the relaquering (or replating). Such is very costly, degrades the collector's value of an instrument (especially if poorly done), and if buffed prior to the relacquer process, can damage the playing qualities of the horn.
