Tenor sax, like most woodwind instruments, is written in treble clef. The range is from about a Bb below the staff too probably around the E above the staff. This is probably where most of the notes will be. Going much higher is altissimo notes. It is in the key of Bb, and as far as i knw has fingerings similar to some of the clarinet's fingerings. That's about as much as I can tell you.

The tenor sax goes from the Bb that is the flat of the note that is under the line below the treble clef all the way up to the F that is in the space above third line above the treble clef. All saxes have the same fingerings and they are similar to the oboe and the clarinet.

Let's be clear about this: the people giving the tenor saxophone range from Bb below middle C to F two octaves and fifth above that Bb are referring to the WRITTEN range, not the sounding range. The sounding range of the tenor saxophone is from two Ab's below middle C to the Eb two octaves and fifth above that Ab---in otherwords, a major ninth below the written range.

well, first i hope u take the tenro cause it is the best one instrument that features jazzy to rock and classical style. I honesty hope u take the tenor becuase i had been in the same situation as you are now. but the tenor is the best thing i ever went through.
well, i little back ground of the saxophone, the saxophone is a hibrid of a clarinet and the oboe. oboe's reed and bell is used and clarintes'keys is used.
this is very important..

then there are the saxophone family.
the most conventionals are the soprano, alto , tenor, and baritone. I don't want to go over all the family of the saxophone such as counter soprano, sopranino, bass ,
contrabass
the soprano and baritone is an Ab instrument, alto is Eb instrument, and lasty the coolest (the tenor) is Bb.

Bb in terms of the concert instruments such as the piano. so if you play the piano, you would start the range from the Bb to F.
the sax since is is the offspring of clarinet and oboe has a lot of things in common.
tenor sax in particular is Bb instrument and so does the clarinet(the Bb clarint) also the trumpet(Bb). also we read treble clef

well classically and convensionally speaking,
the tenor saxophone ranges from low Bb to high F. this has 2 octuves
it can reach 4 octurves if you have the right fingerings and techniqye and the kind of the matterial and serial numeber and style. such as you can play a low A.
But u as a beginner, if you choose the tenor, never have to bother or think about it. The tenor is one of the most versatile and glorious members of the family.
so good luck hope you choose the right one(tenor).

pease..
