 Clarinet to Contrabass
Author: Jessica
Date:   2004-03-06 17:50

I've played the Bb clarinet for 7 years and for my senior year, my teacher wants me to switch to the contrabass clarinet. I'm thinking it's Eb because that is the most seen. Does anyone know of any resourses that could help me, because I'll basicly be a beginner.
I'm switching because he needs one in the higher band [Wind Ensemble instead of Concert Band].
Any help will be great. You can e-mail me.

there are two of them, Eb and Bb. a way to check is to get a bass clarinet and the contra together. get the bass clarinet to play a low C and the contra to play a high C. if they sound the same then it is pitched in Bb. if they do not sound the same then it is an Eb. and if you want to make sure. if it doesn't sound the same with the bass clarinet, you can try a alto clarinet. and do the same but with the note G. and then they should sound the same. you can also try this with a piano, with concert Bb. play a C or a G on the clarinet. hope this helps.

I don't think you'll find much on the web on how to play the contrabass clarinet. Once you can get a note out of it, you'll find it is the same as the soprano. THe fingering is the same except that you might find a few very low notes below low E which don't exist on the soprano clarinet. The mouthpiece will feel very different as it is much bigger. Just play around with it until you can get the notes out.

You shouldnt find it too hard in the band because contrabass parts are always way easier than sop. parts.

Lower jaw, lots of air, and pratice alot. and I have heard lots more tips. You would think its a really hard instrument because so many of the players you hear at schools are realy crappy. Lots of band teachers don't see it as that important of a instrument i guess. Or the players never have hard parts so they never pratice.
