The number after the letter name indicates the specific "A" or "C" (the octave) that the writer is looking for. The smaller the number, the lower the octave. I believe C3 is middle C...I think. Those who know for certain, please correct me.

Mark, if you play the note C and then proceed up the white notes of the keyboard, you will come to D, E, F, G, A, B and then another C. Playing these two C's together, you will hear they sound the same but different. One is higher than the other. An octave is the musical distance between these two notes. The high C is an octave higher than the low C. You could also play an octave lower by going the opposite direction from C downward through B, A, G, F, E, D and down to a very low C. This is an octave lower than the the first C.

Another use of the word octave is to mean all the notes from C up as far as B. All seven notes are 'in the same octave'. Octaves on a full size piano can be numbered so that the notes in the first octave are C1, D1, E1, and so on, the next octave are C2, D2 etc. Middle C is C4.

This system is not standard, so whatever book you are using may use a slightly different way of labelling the notes. Middle C might be C3 or C2 on your keyboard.

There are few different ways of labelling the octaves. The American way is call the lowest octave on the piano keyboard 1, the next octave 2 and so on. In this system, C4 is middle C.

The European way is to use a lowercase c for the c below middle c. Middle c itself has a tick (an apostrophe) beside it so it is c' while higher c notes have more ticks: c'' c''' etc. The note an octave below c is called C in upper case. Lower c notes have a subscript tick like a comma so we have C, C,, and so on.

There are other systems as well. I haven't seen the system described by Saxaplaya.

The system i use comes from Dr.spencer hes supposebly (i cant spell) the music theory god and Its the way its tought at Florida stae university and and At my high school in the middle of nowhere in florida. We have an AP(advance placement as in get college credit) Music theory class and thats on of the first things we learn. Well I only know a little cause my friend is teaching me piano so I dont know much yet but if im totally wrong im ok with it cause im ussually one but the way i learn it Was that C1 was middle C. If I had the tittle of the book we used i would say it but i dont.
