I've been playing tenor sax for a while and i'm really bored with. I'm in a concert band so i don't get any good parts (no jazz stuff) mostly quater notes and the occasional sixteenth note. It really boring and the other instruments seem to paly more difficult parts. I want to change instruments so i can acctually have a bit of a chanllenge. I'm not really interested in playing flute, i don't need the melody all the time but i would still like to play a woodwind. My question is which one?

you can always try clarinet. they get melody and have challenging pieces. or switch over to alto sax. they have more difficult pieces then tenors sometimes get. or even oboe. although you might just have to drop tenor to get a great tone. pick an instrument that you like the sound off, one that you will like to play and it doesn't seem like a chore. check out different instruments at your school, college/university, or music dealer, and whichever you like, go with it. hope this helps.

If you really want a challenge...try the oboe or bassoon. They play the melody some, but not all of the time. However, it really depends on what you want to try.

I would say definitly go to alto. Stick with tenor for jazz or marching bands, but for concert band you could go to alto because they have better parts. It will also keep your embouchure in better practice than something like bassoon. It will not be a hard switch from tenor to alto, either.

Troubled, i had the exact same problem, i switched over from tenor to clarinet and i absolutely love it. the parts are much more challenging and in my opinion the tenor helps teach good clarinet playing. But that was jus my own experience, i guess i just "cliqued" with that instrument. So try whichever instrument sounds best to you, good luck.
