What is the best brand of reed out there? I think it's Fox, but that's only because I've seen 2 or 3 types here in Hawaii. Plus, when is it good to have a soft, medium-hard reed,etc? Is it true that hard reeds can hit high notes better?

It's better if you can make your own, but as a novice you probably can't. My advice is to seek out someone who makes handmade reeds, and buy from them. They are typically of much higher quality than the mass produced ones. Hitting high notes all depends on the air really, and the shape of your mouth, and your orientation of your upper lip to lower lip. It's best to use a reed with flexibility; by that I mean that you can play notes responsively in all registers.

d-oboe has probably given all there is to know about what u need to do. basically hard reeds will respond better on high notes because you are not really using your air support FOR NOW. you are taking advantage of the reed. so it takes a lot of practise and a good supply of reeds to advance. hand made is not optional but crucial to your development of the concept of good tone and intonation. plus flexibility.

If you can't find someone to buy handmade reeds from I would suggest buying Jones reeds. I've been playing on them for 3 years now because I have no one to buy handmade ones from. I've found the Jones reeds to be better than the other brands I've tried. However, handmade reeds are the best.

I would get either the Forrests reeds or the Duste reeds (a bit pricier)
Start practicing making your own reeds!

I play Bassoon, and I love Jones reeds. woodwind brasswin (www.wwbw.com) has some good deals.
