Two questions: what key is soprano sax in, and 2: I'm having trouble playing a small range of notes, even though I can get out notes above and below them. I can get out low C, below the staff, but can not get from d-a, on the staff. I get get out Bb up. Anyone else who has more experience on soprano than me, ever have that problem or have any suggestions?

The soprano saxophone is in Bb, which means that when you play a C on the saxophone, it will sound the same as a C on the concert pitch instruments (piano, flute, violin etc).

ah soprano sax is fun. these low notes, do they shoot up an octave to high? or do they not come out at all? if they go up an octave to high, loosen your embouchure. it's too tight and it squezing the notes to come out to high. if they don't come out at all, then it's your horn. also try moving up a reed size, at 3-4 are good. also check out your mouthpiece, my stock mouthpiece was old and had dents on the inside of the mouthpiece. that slows down the air and effects the quality of tone and can limits your range. hope this helps.

Gnomon...don't you mean if she plays a C it will be a *Bb* on concert instruments?

Oops! Sorry about that! I'll repeat my post correctly this time:
The soprano saxophone is in Bb, which means that when you play a C on the saxophone, it will sound the same as a Bb on the concert pitch instruments (piano, flute, violin etc).

you might be able to fix tha problem. try jiggling the keys, they might be just a little bit out of alignment. don't shake them too vigorously though, or that could cause damage. hope this helps.
