Please help explain - In music I am practicing (the meter is 4/4) how do I properly play a measure that has two whole notes in one measure with three beams notated between the two notes (the whole notes are not connected by the beams... instead the beams are written on an angle (much like a repeat-the-previous-measure sign)

You play the two notes repeated as far as you can for the duration of one whole note. Technically each individual note should be a 32nd note long (as indicated by the three bars).

this is a tremolo. I know it's confusing to have two whole notes in one bar, but all it means is that you switch back and forth (trill basically) for *one* whole note length, not two. Depending on what kind of music you're reading it can either be an exact measurement (as Gnomon said playing 32nd notes) or just as fast as a trill would go(unmeasured, but still for 4 beats.)
