You could try using some vibrato (vihb-RAH-toe) to make it sound somewhat more vocal, but don't overuse it. The best advice I can give is to imagine how someone would sing the part you have, and then try to mimmick that on your sax. However, the most important thing at any time in your music making is the "integrity" of your tone/sound. Always work for a clear, focused, deep, and rich tone first; then add in additional expressive elements. Using vibrato on a fuzzy, unfocused, out of tune tone won't make it sound any better.
For a quick analogy: music is alive, and like living things, it is always, and must always be changing! So, if you were to drone a whole note in as beautiful a song as American Elegy, I think your conductor would have a few unkind words for you! So: think: what is the music doing? growing louder/softer? is the texture getting thicker/thinner? Where is this music going, what is it trying to say? What role does your "voice" play?
Once you answer those questions, the answer to what you need to do is obvious. Perhaps you could swell( grow somewhat louder/broader) or maybe even fade away; whatever the music seems to ask for; use the music as your guide, because really there are no "set" rules on how to interpret a piece, just some more appropriate than others.
Good luck!
