I've narrowed it down to 2 instruments, and for those of you who don't know what i'm talking about i'll inform you that i've been wondering what other instrument i should play and a lot of people helped me out(THANX)and i've narrowed it down to................Either the soprano sax or the clarinet because they are smaller and woodwind instruments are cool.I chose soprano because it's challenging or so i've heared and hardlly any one plays it thats what i like best about it it will make me stand out from everry body else, but what i don't like about it is it isn;t used in concert band on the regular basis(big disapointment).Clarinet on the other hand is cool because it is used on the regular basis in band and i like the sound of it and boys don't really play it.The thing i don't like about clarinet is that it is popular and i'll be just another clarinet player. So l'm counting on you to decide for me whatever gets the most votes i will play because i can't decide for myself. Please help me and don't write "try them out and see wich one you like best" because i've done it already.JUST VOTE SOPRANO OR CLARINET PLEASE THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

Uhh, why not start out on alto sax? That would be much easier than trying to start out on soprano, and you would also be able to play in concert band. Alto isn't that much bigger than soprano, and you would also save yourself some money by buying an alto first instead of going off whilly-nilly and buying a soprano. If you've never played any instrument before, trust me, going out and immediately trying to get started on soprano if you want to be a saxophone player is not wise.

yes soprano sax is cool and awesome to play, the only place you'll get to play it is in jazz band unless your band comes across a very rare piece that calls for it. Torus is right, starting on soprano is hard to do. i've found that many soprano's like to be sharp. clarinet would be a better choice for a few reasons. 1) it's used everywhere, even in jazz. 2)for a beginner it's not the most difficult. 3)you can find help for a clarinet almost anywhere sicne so many poeple play it. 4)when you become really good at clarinet you can double on soprano sax. the embouchures aren't too different and the clarion register of the clarinet is the same as D-B(high) on sax. good luck on your choice. hope this helps.

1) the clarinet would be more challenging. In doing so, you would be a legitimate "Doubler".
2) Few play Soprano at your level because there is no call for it. What enjoyment would you get out of an instrument you'd rarely play besides in solo/ensemble situations?
3) The soprano can be a repulsive sounding instrument when played by those who haven't developed a sound tonal concept.
4) A good soprano will run you 5-10X what a clarinet will. you can get a servicable clarinet with decent build quality and decent intonation off ebay AND get a few repairs on it for about $100. For three times as much, you can get a poor soprano saxophone that will refuse to hold adjustment and have uncorrectable intonation issues.

I vote for oboe or flute. You will stand out more on those than on clarinet, plus they are two cool instruments

Just so you know i'm NOT a starter!!! I began playing the alto in 5th grade and i switched to tenor in 8th grade and i'm still playing the tenor sax this year,i just want to explore. I'v also played the viola, violin, bass, and a tiny bit of the trumpet so I DO have experience!! And i appreiciate those who reccommend other instruments but i set my mind on clarinet and soprano and thats it.

Definitely clarinet. You'll be able to pick up soprano anytime, since you already know how to play the saxophone.
But since you are willing to put the time into learning an instrument, it might as well be something different, something that expands your capabilities. I'd recommend buying a plastic clarinet to start off, such as the Buffet B12.
