I play the tenor sax and i also want to play something lighter to carry.I'm thinking of the soprano sax or the piccolo,but i know i'd have to go to another planet to play the piccolo so no one could make fun of me.does any one else know any other small instruments that could be played on the regular basis in a concert band?

clarinet? it's smaller, not the hardest instrument to learn, some fingerings are the same on both instruments.
Sax? alto or soprano. alto is smaller and used often. soprano is used mainly in jazz, and fun to play.
Flute or piccolo? you maybe made fun off, but who cares? it's lightweight, smaller, and offeres a challenge you can't get with reeded instruments.
but with choosing a smaller instrument your embouchure has to be smaller and/or tighter. and even small adjustments in embouchure can effect tuning. hope this helps.

The soprano saxophone really is a specialized instrument. It has little use outside of adult contemporary jazz (aka 'elevator music' or 'muzak'), small wind ensembles, or occasional parts in larger groups.
if you're looking to double, clarinet would be the easiest and wouldn't cost much. Flute would be a more difficult transition, but only slightly more expensive. Oboe would be both difficult and expensive.

I would do either clarinet or alto sax, both would be a very easy transition.

Clarinet embouchure is much more difficult to learn than a sax embouchure. If you're looking for something easy, go with a soprano sax. The flute also has a lot of the same fingerings as the sax. But switching from sax to clarinet would be much harder than switching from clarinet to sax, especially a tenor sax unless you aren't looking to get really good and just want something to fiddle around with in band.
