what is the purpose of the resonance key on the oboe?

when playing a forked F, another key opens up just opposite where the E-flat key would open. it helps bring the F up to pitch and "unstuffs" the tone. There is also a Bb resonance key on the bell of most professional instruments that allow for a less honky low note.

it's the fingering where the middle finger on your right hand is Not holding a key down.
