 AHHH! E-flat Clarinet!
Author: Katie

Hey! I want to expand upon playing the clarinet with adding the E-flat. I currently play the Bass Clarinet and B-flat in band, and the Tenor Sax in Jazz. Would anyone know how much of a difference there is to playing the E-flat? Thanks for your time and I appreciate the help.

I play the Eb soprano clarinet, you need a much tighter embechure(sp?) and the sound is usually sharp. The sound once you get to 3rd octave G (that the clarinet can play) it gets very hard to get a crisp clear NICE sound out of it....it takes a lot of practice and time, but it is loads of fun! :)

a good way of thinking about what your embouchure should be like is to think of what the note your playing on your Eb corresponds to on your Bb. For example the G right above the staff corresponds to the Bb's high C, A=D, B=E, and C=F. So try using the Embouchure/breath support you would for a Altissimo F on Bb when you play a high C on Eb. Good luck, its a very fun instrument to play.

a few other things as well. when playing higher notes on the Eb, have your throat in the position as if your going to speak the vowel E. have your cavity in your mouth smaller so the air speed is much quicker. hope this helps.
