I am having fun with my oboe but am having problems hitting the higher notes. Is there a special technique I just haven't learned or is that typical for a new player. Example - low D to upper D, upper E, and beyond.

to play the upper notes try putting a little tiny bit more reed in your mouth. it can make a big difference and when you want to play notes like d below the staff and below put a little less reed in your mouth.

AIR SUPPORT. That's the best answer. Don't be afraid of the high notes. Try not to move your lips with reed intake because that can hurt your tone sometimes. If you use faster air, it should help. Also, on low notes, drop your jaw. That will give your throat a more open-feel and let more air get through to play the low D, C, Bb, etc. Hope this helps.
