Hi. I am a sax player who is going to start doubling (or attempting to) on clarinet. I was wondering how different the fingerings are (obviously new ones for the extended range above and below) compared to the sax. I have heard from some that clarinet and sax are easy transfers, and yet from others I have heard that many new fingerings must be learned on clarinet. Any help or advice is appreciated.

I am not sure about the fingerings, but I so know that transerfing to clarinet should be easy! Where I live if you want to play sax you have to have a year on the clarinet first before you can play it. Sooo that obviously means that they are really close.....and if you play the *harder* instrument currently, clarinet should be a cinch(sp?).

The clarinet is a much harder instrument than the saxophone, so you have a bit of learning to do. The basic fingering of the upper octave is the same as the clarinet, but the other notes are different. Even within that similar octave, some of the semitones are in different places.
You'll figure it out, though. Harder to adjust to is the very tight embouchure on the clarinet. Start with a very soft reed - don't try to go too far too quickly.

I would say the lower/middle fingerings remind me more of bassoon than anything, but I think the higher ones are similar (although Im not positive on that). BTW, clarinet is most definitly not easier, there is no easy instrument to perfect- its just that some are easier to "pick up" than others.

I play the clarinet and I'm attempting to transfer to the Tenor Sax. For a Sax player, the clarinet can get confusing, but take it a little at a time. Don't try to learn more than five notes in a day, or else you'll confuse yourself. If you want, learn to or three octaves of a certain note, that might help too. I'm sure you'll do fine, but it'll take awhile...Don't get discouraged!! Good Luck!
