Hi there.
A few months ago I wrote to the forum about going from flute to oboe. I got a really great response from a lot of people, and I'm happy to say I decided to give oboe a try. So I started getting lessons on the school's oboe that I'm hiring, and I'm going really well. I'm already in the school's senior orchestra, and everyone says they think I get a better sound than the first oboist. I'm also really enjoying it. Once you get past the problems with a squeeling reed and numb lips, it really is a lot of fun to play. It's something a little bit different, and not many people play it, and I think I'm much more suited to it than to the flute.

Chris: Glad to hear you are doing so well with the transition from flute to oboe. I'm not an oboist, but I think the oboe is one of the most interesting instruments, and I think good oboists are in short supply.
It sounds like you've given up the flute. If not the case, how do you find playing the flute, particularly the affect on embouchure?

You're right, it's certainly an interesting instrument. I haven't given up the flute at all, but I'm practicing oboe more. I never practice flute straight after oboe, I always practice before, or not at all on that day. I've found that as yet it hasn't made a HUGE difference to my embouchure, but my sound on the flute has jazzed up a little, and gotten a little rougher. Blowing much harder with the reed has given me more confidence with shooting for those higher notes on the flute though....
