ok, i'm only in the eigth grade and i'm going to try out for an all-star band. i really think i'm ready and i think i will make it but i'm not sure if there's anything else i should be prepared for. i play the bass clarinet and i can play almost all of the seven required scales two octives by memory. i have to play these seven major scales and they're in concert pitch: A flat, B flat, C, D flat, E flat, F, and G. the only one i can't play two octives is the C. of course, it is really difficult to hit a high D on a bass clarinet, but i am working on it. i don't think i will be able hit the D consistantly by the time auditions start. is there a way to hit the D without going flat or getting a bad tone? is there anything, i need to learn for my audition other than the music i have to perform? your help is greatly appreciated.

use fast air, and lots of it. high notes need a more controlled air stream then a low note like C. practise, that D is important note, not just for auditioning, but it's the next step in hitting those freaky high altissimo notes. over time that D will come out, if you work at it, it will come out in shorter time, spend time with. hope this helps.

Make sure you know your scales really well. If you do bad on your scales but well on everything else the judges still might not give you a good score because scales are considered fundimental. Just practice those and you will do fine.
