E-flat soprano Clarinet high notes fingerings
Author: joca

hi,
can anyone help me how to get fine intonation on the high notes of the E-flat soprano clarinet(or sopranino, whatever) especially E5 and above (everything goes right till D#5) considering the MIDI Octave Designation Systems (http://www.music.vt.edu/musicdictionary/appendix/octaveregisters/octaveregisters.html)?? This notes sound flat, nearly 1/4 of tone lower or even more. Can it be from my enbouchure?! If so, what can i do.
Some fingerins or tricks will be helpful.

I've been playing B-flat soprano clarinet for more than 20 years, but now someone asked me to play the E-flat clarinet in some solos. Cincerly i can tell all clarinetists that is not a "flatter" job to give someone you care about :)

Thanks in advance (and if my experience can help anyone please make me know)

You need to tighten your embechure alot more than the Bb, I also play the Eb soprano and the Bb soprano. But usually what happens with Higher instruments is that they tend to be more sharp, but if you have one sit down with a tuner in front of you and play through your music and and stop whenever you see the note getting sharp/flat and fix it.....if you keep on doind this your mouth will start to do it automatically, Good luck and I hope you like the Eb soprano! :D

You will also have to support your air stream much better than with the Bb. While you do need a firmer embouchure, DON'T BITE OR PINCH. You will probably need to change the position of your tongue inside your mouth a bit too.

Practice, practice, practice. I didn't get the altissimo E in tune until a couple of days before the concert in which I was going to have to play the note.

What do you mean that playing e flat clarinet is not a "flatter" job???? Playing the e flat clarinet is an honor and you should be honored to play it!!!!!!!! At my school district, you have to be one of the top two clarinetists to play it!!!! And you say it's not a flatter job?? If someone asks you to play the e flat soprano clarinet you should take it as a compliment, because whoever asked you to play it obviously thinks that you have talent. So stop telling lies...to those of you who believed this statement: "Cincerly i can tell all clarinetists that is not a "flatter" job to give someone you care about :)", playing the e flat IS a "flatter" job and if you get asked to play it, you should be extremely proud of yourself because this is a true accomplishment:)

Thank you.

~KT
