My friend plays trumpet, but wants to buy/rent an alto and learn how to play...what's the best brand for this?

The best student instrument would be one that's in proper adjustment with decent intonation. Selmer USA and Yamaha are two well known entities.

well, if you want to go on more top of the line and more compatible w/ other saxes, try a accent saxophone. These are almost exact models of a saxophone that costs well over $4k (forgot brand name), but ours only cost around $1.5k
