In one of my flute music it shows a dotted tie, i didn't think they exsisted! I looked up dotted tie in my music books, but it isn't there. Can anyone please explain how to play a dotted tie. thanks!

the whole tie is dotted like this. ----------- (but obviously curved though) or i guess you could call it a dashed tie.

When there is a vocal part with different numbers of syllables in the different verses, this dashed tie shows that the two notes are tied in those verses that have fewer syllables than notes. Where the number of syllables matchs the number of notes, the two notes are played as separate notes. So the instrumental accompaniment would do the same.

in other words, the slur is probably matching the way a word is pronounced. If you are indeed playing with vocalists (or there is words to what you are playing) look at what they are actually saying when you have this dashed tie. If you have one syllable and two notes, then you would slur the two notes, whereas if there was two syllables and two notes, then you would tongue them.
