The clarinet is a very good instrument to start with. Thats how I started out. My teacher told me that the sax is often to heavy and kids often drop out. So if you ask me I would say that he should start with the clarinet.Thats not the only thing he will also know how to play two instruments.

who are you talking about? you or someone that is a beginner musicain? both instruments are fine. sax can be used in concert band and jazz band. clarinet can be used in concert band, but thanks to saxophones, it isn't really accepted into the jazz circle to often anymore. it's also a matter of opinion, whichever the person would like to play. saxophones can be heavy to younger kids, so an alto would be a best bet to start out, it's small, and the keys aren't spread out to far. clarinet, small, keys aren't spread apart, easy to handle, offers a challenge to those who want to be very good on that instrument. hope this helps.

I would say go with Sax because it is regularly not heavy if you have the neck strap adjusted. From experience you should just let him choose or he may drop out if you choose it for him. **Saxophone** I started out with sax and completly love it... It's the perfect instrument for Jazz band...

Umm...HEAVY? it's not heave at all...and crying outloud, they supposed 2 have neckstraps to PREVENT dropping it. But actually, the sax is better to start off for various reasons:
1. It is SUPPOSED to have a neckstrap, which prevents you from dropping it
2. You have a VERY simple embochure (just an O shape)
3. Less squeeking (previous experience from beginning band, for every sax squeek, there were 8 clarinet squeeks)
4. Easier to double-toungue on

I disagree I just switched from clairnet to Baritone Saxaphone and I enjoy the Bari a lot more than clairnet, but its tru it is quite heavy.

I can't really say the sax is heavy. I play the baritone for the Fife youth jazz orchestra and was carrying it up and down 4 flights of stairs every week. And thats the only time I found it heavy, but if your playing it as long as the neck straps adjusted correctly then you would have no problem. Its the same for all instruments.

I agree.
I think the clarinet is much easier to start with.
I am still playing it now, and think it is a great instrument to play.
Also, u dont have to switch to sax. If u think aboout Benny Goodman, about the best clarinetest ever (if i may say so), he played clarinet like his whole life!
