From Bass Clarinet to Soprano Sax
Author: Patrick

I have been playing Bass Clarinet for over 2 years. I am contemplating learning Soprano Sax. I am wondering what it would be like in terms of learning a new fingering. From you experience how long does it take one to get acquainted?

If you are familiar with clarinet fingerings, then learning saxophone fingerings sound be fairly simple. Of course there will be quite a few new fingering to learn.

As for the time it takes - that depends on how dedicated to learning the new instrument you are and the level of a musician you currently are. Also keep in mind that you never will know everything there is to know about an instrument, therefore "getting acquainted" will take forever.

I do not know the reason you are wanting to learn this new instrument, but I don't think you should waist your time learning a new instrument that you will never use to perform when you could be practicing your bass clarinet and becoming a better player on it. Of course, if you have a particular reason for learning it (like jazz band) then, certainly, go for it.

Hey Patrick,
I read your thing about the bass clarinet to soprano sax! Well, I go from contrabass clarinet to tenor sax everyday which is like going from bass to soprano! well It's not as hard as you think! You know the break of the bass clarinet is similar to the notes of the saxophone so (and all sax fingerings are the same) so you could do it! from the C in the staff to the B is basically the same thing so you know! well e-mail me back and tell me what you think! ok??

Brandon

I have been in band for a number of years and changing instruments is not as hard as it seems. At first you will have to adapt to the change, but if you want to learn it will be worth it. I believe that to truly know your instrument inside and out,you have to experience others to know how good or bad you may have it.

Good luck and God bless,
Darci

I think what you're doing is great. I've been playing b-flat clarinet for 20 years, almost 21,now. I played e-flat soprano clarinet in college for 2 semesters. I went from playing clarient to alto saxophone, alto saxophone to tenor saxophone, tenor saxophone to oboe (found out the oboe wasn't me even though I could play it). I traded my oboe in for a soprano saxophone and love it.

most wood wind fingerings are the same. i play bs. cl. and tenor sax too. the only real difference is the middle c is played with the 2nd left finger. maybe...JUST MAYBE...you will have some mouth piece adaptation problems. (since its like playing a tuba and jumping to a trumpet)

I have been informed by many people that this transition to bassoon is impossible, and to do so.. I must drop saxophone. However, ive been playing tenor for 6 years now... but I also wish for a classical background.. Any ideas!? Ive got a whole district relying on my playing bassoon, and 2 skools relying on a sax playa....!!!

Personally, I think it's perfectly possible. In theory a change from any wind instrument to another is possible, even while still regularly playing the other one, as long as you are prepared to practise regularly on both. Both instruments are great, so I can see why you want to play both. My advice to you is, try learning both, if u have good teachers anything is possible, along with, obviously, regular practise.

Their is no instrument that you can't switch too. I went from B-flat soprano clarinet to BB-flat contrabass clarinet. At 1st when I tryied to play clarinet, i was kinda bad. But then i got used to it again and now i am good on both and can switch easily. Don't stop praticing your old instrument! I learned tuba for marching band. that was fun. But i was playing most of our songs in about a week.
