It helps alot when you have a keyboard when you want to transpose music. If you do this is what you do, first, set the keyboard to the type of instrument that you need to transpose for for instants the alto sax it is a E flat instrument. then you play the music that is written on the sheet of music and make the appropriate changes with the flats and sharps. THat is how ya do it. thank you for taking time to read this.

to transpose from a piano(C) to alto saxophone(Eb) you travel a fifth up or a fourth down(i could be wrong). so for example, when a piano plays Bb, an alto will play G to sound the same(this is right). from here you can figure out any note you need. but to be safe, when your done transposing, play it with a piano to make sure you got it right.

It's not a fourth or a fifth - it's a minor third. You play each note a minor third, or three semitones, lower than the way it is written. So if you see a C, you play it as an A. If you see an Eb, you play it as a C.

Why is it that whenever we get questions about transposing we always get a bunch of different answers, most of which are wholly unclear and ambiguous? It seems like something that should be so simple to answer... simple at least if you only want an easily implementable answer.

I'm also in a church praise band...i play clarinet, alto and tenor, so I have a lot of music to transpose :) (Not to mention all the things I have to write/transpose for band and jazz band). If you're going to need to be doing lots of transposing in the near future, you might thing about purchasing software to make it easier...it's always good to know how to do it without a computer program, incase you don't have access to one at times, but if you're interested, there are some pretty good programs out there that you can get for less than 100 dollars. Check out www.wwbw.com if you're interested :)

The Piano is a C instrument, the pianist reads middle C and plays middle C. Middle C is one ledger line below treble clef staff. The alto saxophone is an E flat instrument, meaning the alto sax player reading middle C is actually playing E flat on the the 3rd space of the bass clef staff. If the alto sax is to play the same C as the piano, the the sax player would need to read the A on the 2nd space of the treble clef staff. To play in unison (same note and same octave), the piano music would have to be transposed up a major 6th for alto sax.

How to transpose for alto sax? Move each note up two lines and a space or 2 spaces and a line. That gets the notes in position. You also have to change the key signature by adding 3 sharps. If you are starting from a flat key, subtracting a flat is the same as adding a sharp. You will also have to check for accidentals.

This works for piano music written in the treble cleff. Piano also uses bass cleff, but this is used mostly for harmony. Piano music written in bass clef only needs the key signature adjusted by adding 3 sharps and the F clef replaced with the G clef. This trick also makes trombone music easy to transpose an octave higher for alto sax!

The alto sax plays a perfect fifth below the trumpet, soprano sax and clarinet. It plays a perfect 4th above the tenor sax, but these are all B flat instruments.
