hey ppl... my band director told me the other day that she wanted me to move to bass clarinet after marching band season was over... but she wouldn't give me any details on the instrument... is the bass clarinet really any different than the clarinet?

no, it's pratically the same, it just has a few more keys at the bottom to go lower. Just be prepared though to play really boring parts it you play Bass. Most of the notes you will be playing is whole notes and ties.

Bb bass clarinet is one octave lower then the soprano. two sometimes three extra keys to make your imnstrument go to nice low, floor rumbling notes. the mouthpiece is bigger so your embouchure will need to be bigger and looser.

not always true, some of the songs we play has somewhat interesting bass clarinet parts. Obviously they are not as 'interesting' as a high woodwind, but the more advanced the music gets the more interesting the parts get.
