 vibrato

Hey
I had a question about a vibrato in flute. I'm just learning how to play it and I was wondering if your lips are supposed to slightly move when you are playing it. Is a vibrato all about controlling the air with your throat or do the lips have anything to do with it?
Thanks

I believe (I may be wrong, it's been a while since i've had the chance to play the flute)that your lips shouldn't move at all. It is all about controlling the air.

You have to support your air in your diaphragm better when playing vibrato. The vibrato is usually used in long notes or the note at the end of a phrase. To do the vibrato, after you have tongued the note you have to blow the air like in a series of 'hu-hu-hu-hu-hu.' And your lips will feel like they are moving a little bit because the air is now coming out of your lips more pressurized than usual like when playing steady notes. Your inner lips will feel more tight.

Hope this helps.

And don't move lips intentionally to do the vibrato.

yes vibrato is best not talked about, but just think of "laughing" (ha-ha-ha) into your instrument. It will be bumpy and kinda gross at first, but with some practice, you will be able to mimick the vocal qualities of a good vibrato on your instrument. Try listening to professional recordings of flutists to get an idea of what it can sound like.
