If I buy a bassoon what would be a good company to buy from?

The best professional-grade bassoons are made by Heckel, Fox, Yamaha or Puchner, but you better be sitting down when you see the prices: $12,000 to $35,000!
Fox's student line, Renard is very good. If you price shop, you can get a new Renard starting about $3,000. Moosmann are also very good, they're harder to find in the U.S. and more money, I think. Schreibers are also pretty good. You really should audition instruments to find the one that is best for you. If you don't play, find a private instructor who can help you make the right choice, it's a bunch of money!
You might think about a used one, too.

If your just starting bassoon, rent one to get a feel for the instrument. Best to use a maple instr. from the beginning, plastic is not for the serious student.
If your advanced, stick to the U.S. or European mfrs. Eastern mfrs. are generally made too fast for quality.
Heckel is tops, strictly pro. Fox/Renard are more reasonable for students as are Moosman, Schreiber or Selmer.
You have to try the instrument. Used ones are available from shops or schools but should be checked and overhauled by a reputable repairman, not a music shop "repair" job.
Good luck. I bought a Fox model II for less than $3k 10 years ago.

If you REALLY want a good Bassoon, buy a Puchner. consider the prices though, 12,000-35,000!YIKES
