I am almost 40 years and played a clarinet for 4 years upto age 15. I haven't touched an instrument since, but I am considering buying a soprano sax which has always been my favorite instrument.
Does anyone have any advise for me? Such as where to buy beginner method books for the soprano, what model soprano to buy, if I should just forget about this crazy idea because it's impossible, etc. I am considering the Yamaha YSS-475.
Thanks for any advice.

Soprano isn't impossible to buy, though it is more expensive then a clarinet. i've never seen a biggining method book for soprano, i've been looking for one and have never found it(i may not have been looking hard enough though). i'd suggest getting a tenor sax book, the fingerings are the same and its in Bb like the Soprano. Yamaha is a good name for soprano, i haven't tried a yamaha because i had two choices a S&B in my price range and a yamaha just to look at and dream. If you remember any fingerings from clarinet that would be good because many of the upper register notes are the same on both instruments. Hope this helps.

I just started playing sax, and with a little practice its not too hard to learn. I think its awesome that your gonna play again, definitly go for it! As I've said a lot before, wwbw.com has great prices. My flute is a yamaha, and I love it! Its a very good brand.

If you can play clarinet, then you will find the saxophone very easy, although the soprano is harder to play than the alto or tenor. The main problem you'll have is playing with too tight an embouchure. The sax needs a looser embouchure than the clarinet.

Go for it! I just have on two years clarinet experience, and so far so good. The fingering, at least over the lower two octaves, is straight forward, and if my experience is anything to go on, I would predict you can get tunes out within an hour. I would agree with Gnomon's comments about embouchure (spelling?), but just experiment - you will soon find out how to do it. As far as the Yamaha is concerned - excellent choice IMHO, although in my case I couldn't justify it :-(.

Rick by a Cannonball Professional and ask the store owner to pick out a book to help you because I can play all four of the Saxaphones and the fingering is the same but the tone is different so I didn't buy any Saprano books.
