My 11 year old son wants to learn clarinet. What is a good beginner clarinet to purchase that might last through high school?

As a beginner, on any instrument, not just clarinet, I would strongly recommend renting before purchasing one. This allows the student to make up their mind; lets them figure out if they really want to play it. Also, if he is commited enough (which he should be if he wants to buy one) have him take lessons from a professional. Professionals know the do's and don'ts when it comes to buying instruments, and they can help you pick the best one.
Try looking at this website(even though it's for oboes&english horns) for some general purchasing tips:

Good Luck!

It would be better to buy a plastic clarinet. I suggest you to buy a Buffet B12, it is suitable for your son to play several years until high school. The Buffet B10 would be a lighter model and would be suitable for a child of 10 -13 years of age. The Jupiter 631N is a very good horn for beginner of reasonable low price.

It is the best to get the opinion of your son'teacher.
You may also look through the internet. Type "buy a clarinet" in the search box of Yahoo and you'll get a number of useful websites.

Did the band teacher send home a list of suggested instruments to get? If he did I would buy one that he/she had listed on the list. Or you could ask the band teaher on what they suggest, that's always good too. Good luck and I hope your son stays in band. And if your son does end up later not liking the clarinet, there are many different types of clarinets like the bass, Eb Soprano(i have played that!), and more that he might like to try later on and they all pretty much have the same fingerings except for some extra low notes on the low clarinets(bass...) Good luck again!

I also would recommend the Buffet B12 as a good plastic clarinet that looks nice and plays well. It should certainly do your son for the first four years or so.

The plastic student grade instruments by any of the Big 4 (Selmar, Leblanc, Yamaha, and Buffet) are all excellent choices.

Yamaha makes a nice plastic intermediate model (that's what I used through college), but their beginner models are good too. Buffet is the other brand I reccommend to my students.

i began clarinet four years ago, and as anybody, got what my private lessons teacher and band director suggested. that was in the sixth grade and now i am s freshman in high school with the very same clarinet. it is a beginning model called a BUFFET A CRAMPTON b12. mouthpieces will come into play later, but i wouldnt worry about that now. for later reference on a mouthpiece i would suggest the vandoren b45. it is about $70.00. hope i could be of help.

Well, you should by a good clarinet if your son wants to play all through high school. you shouldnt get wood because wood will brake easier and plastic ones will not... so that is my suggestions!
