I was wondering when u audition for state band county and stuff like that what do they look for whats some good strategys to get a better score?

practice! make sure you play dynamics. most people can do the notes properly, but it's when you go the step farther and play it with all the crescendos and such. hope this helps.

Theboy is correct. Practice is the way to go. When you go to audition the judges will be looking for a few things. One is technique. Did you hit all the right notes at the right times? Did you rest when you should have rested? Another thing they're going to look at musicality. This comprises a few things, one of which is the dynamics. Getting the crescendos and decrescrendos, pianos and fortes is important. Interpretation is also important. Each piece has a certain "spirit" to it. The judges will be aware of this and will look to see that as you play you are looking to capture that spirit in your playing(whether or not you actually manage to capture it will obviously come into play, but even if you don't, if you are headed in the right direction the judge will appriciate this). Be aware of your phrasing as well. Breaths in awkward spots can kill a mood in an otherwise well played piece. Don't articulate just what you are told to by the music, but articulate the phrases as well, as if you were speaking. Be also aware of the difficulty of your particular piece. A technique-intensive piece will mean that you should concentrate more on the technical than on the rest (although this does not mean forget everything else!!!). A piece that is less difficult to play will mean that the artistry of the piece is found in the dynamics and interpretation and you should concentrate more on that.

When sightreading, dont stop if you make a mistake. Keep on going. Dont take sightreading too fast, either. I did that once... It looked really easy until I got to the end where there were all these crazy triplets. Yeah, look over it fast before begining.
Also make sure you know all your scales, including a chromatic. Be able to play them with max octives, tongued and slurred.
