Should the left arm's elbow about at stomach height?

you should sit up straight and have no flute droop(your flute needs to be parellel(sp?) to the ground, so your elnow might come outward by your chest if you are sitting properly. For concert band you might want to droop your flute just a bit but mostly have your flute straight and parellel. So your elnow should come up a bit higher than your stomach and you elbow should push outward a bit. and your elbow should be a little widder than a 90 degree angle when holding your flute but not too much widder. Hope I helped. :)

if you hold it in the wrong position the tuning and the tone are lost so postures very important it annoys me when i see people sitting first with their elbows over the backs of their chairs adn there fingers half off the keys

I agree with ~Heather~. Your elbow should really be above stomach level. If it isn't your tone and just about everything won't sound quite right.

As Heather said, in concert band, you are allowed to have the flute at something slightly less than parallel to the floor, but make sure that you tilt your head to the same angle.
