 What instrument next ?
Author: Jo Simmonds

I have been playing the flute for for three years, the clarinet for 1 year and piccolo for 6 months. I am a reasonably high standard on each ( english grade 6 for flute and picc and grade 5 for clarinet). I was just wondering which instrument could be my fourth, I was thinking of tenor sax, oboe or harp ( I know the last one isn't a wind instrument, but I just thought I would let you know all my choices). I welcome any suggestions because I can't decide.
P.S. Are there any flute players who play the oboe out there because I heard the oboe embouchure can muck up the flute one

I think you have listed some nice choices, each of them good. How about also considering a baroque flute?

I believe that the oboe is a very tricky instrument. If you are going to learn it, you would be well advised to specialise in it. For the general range of instruments you have, a saxophone would make a nice change. However, saxophone is not used very much in orchestra. It is much more of a dance band or jazz instrument. If you are interested in this scene, the sax would be a great choice. I've been told you'll pick it up in no time if you know fulute fingering and clarinet embouchure.

Why pick a tenor? The alto would also be a nice choice.

The harp is very different from anything that you have done, but be warned! A concert harp is very large. You need an enormous car and small porter's trolley to move it around. I have helped a harpist move her harp around and it is not a trivial task. You will not be bringing this one to parties.

I'd go for the sax!

Thank you very nuch for your advice. The reason why the tenor sax is one of my choices is because I play in a wind band (it is similar to a jazz band). In this wind band there is 9 flutes, 5 clarinets , 1 oboe, 1 bassoon, 7 alto saxophones and 2 trumpets. I thought that a tenor saxaphone would be a little diiferent. I chose these instruments because in Endland there are only a few players of these instruments (especially harps) and I wanted to be different.
Anyway after a lot of consideration I might take up the harp (not a concert one, it is a little smaller) this year, tenor sax next year and I will play the oboe when I feel 100% sure of my flute embouchure. But I am still looking for advice abou these instruments, so please help me.

Since you know flute, piccolo, and clarinet, the transition to the oboe would be easier than if you played another instrument. If you keep practicing your head joint on your flute while practicing the mouthpiece on the oboe, you will keep your flute embouchure and learn the oboe. Remember the hardest part on the oboe is the reed. If you practice all of your instruments very carefully, you won't confuse the embouchure.

Saxophone is fun (i play alto in addition to oboe), but oboe is even better.

I play the flute piccolo and oboe.
I think the easiest instrument for you to learn to play would be oboe, because oboe fingering is very similar to flute fingering. Playing the oboe hasn't messed up my embouchure at all.
(But if I were you I'd go for the harp, because it's so different!)

I think you should try the basson. I have a friend who plays it and he loves it.

How about the bassoon? Here in Sweden are players of the basson quite rare, there are only one at my musicschool and he's about 14 years old, I think...
When it comes to saxes, it really shouldn't matter which one you choose.. If you can play one, you can play 'em all..

I play soprano-, alto-, tenor- and barytonsax since eight years. I've played the concerto flute for three years, the picc for one year, the baroque flute for two years, the keyharp (kind of a large violin with keys pressing the strings) for two years and the clarinet for two years..
My goal is to study for flute-soloist at the Swedish Royal Music Academy... (www.kmh.se)

Hope this will help you on your quest for new instruments..

I started on flute and was really good and then taught myself tenor sax. I think it is a lot more fun and a wonderfull switch.
