i read in a little folded paper in the vandoren box that the metal ligaatures give better sound, but it was advertising the new metal ligature. what you need to be aware of is if the ligature is pressing only in the bottom of the reed, not the sides. if you get a ligature with the one screw system, you can get different pressure plates, they press on the reed to give you different tones for the mood of whichever peice you are playing. i don't have a decent metal ligature, just a student model one, so i haven't been able to hear the difference between the two types, but i prefer my rubber better then metal. if possible, try out different ligatures if your going to get a new one. whichever gives you the best response, tone, feel, range will be the one that suits you.

I've had good luck with the Bonade series of metal ligatures. Been using the same one since 6th grade, (in 10th now) and it's been wonderful.

I use a Rovner ligature made of polyester fibric that cost about US$20. According to the instruction sheet inside the packing, the ligature permits reed to vibrate more freely than with conventinal metal ligatues.

I find that my clarinet sounds better and the reed rarely squeaks any more.
