Saxophone is a bit big and heavy although that can be part of the fun sometimes. An instrument that requires a similar embochure(could someone tell me how to spell that?) is the clarinet because the two use the same single reed principle to set up vibration. The trick there is that clarinet requires a much greater degree of control and firmness in the mouth to produce a quality tone. My suggestion would be the flute. Flutes and saxophones are a lot more similar than you would think given the differences between them. The mouth is held much differently, but the fingerings are by and large the same. I hope that you have an awesome time learning to play. Don't get discouraged if it takes time to get started. Work hard and you'll probably find you enjoy it.

I will say that flutes are awesome instruments and not that hard to play if learned properly or got rid of bad habits when playing.

If you like the sax, but dont want to play it, play clarinet. They are very similar.

the clarinet is very similar to play but if u want to play something with almost the same fingering as sax...play oboe or flute.

I would suggest starting on the flute. That's what I started on and then switched to oboe. I also have a friend who started on flute and then went to sax for jazz band.

Hmm... We've all assumed your brother has an alto, but what if he plays tenor? If he playes tenor, you could play alto, its the same, but smaller. I play tenor in marching band, and compared to that, alto isn't that heavy. The fingerings are the same on flute, but I think thats where the similarities end. I don't play clarinet (yet); however, I know that the reed part is similar, but the fingerings arn't so much. Oboe has similar fingerings to sax and flute. I personally think oboe is the closest, but be warned: its a heck of a lot harder then sax, and oboe is a very tempermental instrument. Sorry if this post seemed kind of negitive, I think its wonderful that your gonna play an instrument!!!!! Good luck, and keep us posted on which one you pick.

P.S. Listen to them played, you could also go on the factor of which one you like listening to the best.

P.P.S. For the record my vote is for oboe, even though its hard, its an awesome instrument!!
