 About being tense when playing
Author: Musical Mind

Hey, everybody. How are you?

I know how to relax my shoulder muscles and my throat when I play the flute. But, when I am playing a fast song, it's hard to do that. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Thanks, Steven. I read those well. I don't know about the first one (about the attachments to the flute), but the second one would surely help me.

I don't really know your predicament...but, I would say maybe practice more. I always feel when I haven't practiced enough, especially on the fast passages than I tend to tense up, and get worried. Also try to think of the music more as in phrases, rather than thinking of every sixteenth note, or whatever it may be. I also find that only letting air pass through the mouth, and never through nose, helps me relax, because it forces my lips off the reed, or in your case the lip-plate. (is that what it's called?...I forget)

I talked to my instructor about this...and she said just to remember that it's just music, and it's just a(n) flute (oboe). She says once you let the music take you over, then all is lost. "You have the power!"

The way I relax on really fast pieces is to think that it's faster than it really is and to practice it faster then it's supposed to be, then when you play it at the speed it was written for, it seems really easy and you don't tense up as much. I hope this makes sense.

Yeah, I understand you. When I play fast songs, I try to think that they are not that fast. And I try to relax my fingers when I am playing so I can get all the right notes.

Thanks. :)
