Hello! I've just discovered this site, and I think it's quite cute!
Well I have a question to ask: do you need long fingers to play the oboe? because I had this problem in piano, and I had to quit, and again the same problem with the violin and I had to quit. Recently, I discovered the oboe and fell in love with it, but I am afraid that my fingers might cause me trouble.
In fact, my hand is big but my fingers are little, and I don't have much space between fingers.
So what do you guys think?

I don't think you need long fingers for Oboe. BUT, if you wanna try English Horn, the enlongated Oboe in the key of F, then use. If U try it out then U'll fall in love with it even more.

Any size of fingers can adapt to play the oboe, although short fingers would probably be easier. I have really long fingers, and when I first started playing, my fingers ran over the keys and bumped other side keys, giving me a wrong note, but then I figured out how I should hold it. The other oboe in my band had really short fingers and no problem with it at all! You should get along fine- I say go for it!  I found this site when I was first learning oboe, and it really helped. Thanks, I feel great! At least my short fingers won't be an obstacle for me this time!!! :0)
I really hope everything will be fine this time, and thanks again for the encouragement Mikeyboy. I also welcome any additional tip or information about this subject.

Hey Christine, I dont play Oboe, but its great to always have new people posting on the Forum. More people means more people posting and helping out others in need! Well obviously my names Heather, but anyways good luck with the Oboe!

Have fun playing the oboe! Your short fingers should make it pretty easy since you won't be accidentally putting down the wrong keys.

First, exactly how short are you fingers? If they are really, really short, then you may indeed find some of the keys, especially the ones actuated with your pinky a little awkward to reach at first. However, most of the time short fingers are not an insurmountable obstacle for playing the oboe.
I'd have to take issue with some of the things said on this thread though. Let me be honest and say that if given the choice, I'd much rather have longer than shorter fingers if I were attempting to play the oboe. With longer fingers you might find it easier and more natural to maintain appropriate hand posture, and there would be no stretching at all in trying to find the right key to press. If you have long fingers, and the tips of your fingers are hanging over the edge of the keys and touching the parts to the side of the keys, that is a problem with your hand posture, <i>not</i> a problem with the length of your fingers. You should be touching the keys with the very tip of your fingers, not the fleshy underneath where you would press to make a fingerprint. Also, every single one of your fingers should be curved and relaxed, not ever straight. On the oboe, most people have a tendancy to straighten out the left hand ring finger and both pinky fingers; this is a bad habit you would do well to guard against.

Your hands shouldn't get in the way of you learning the oboe! Although it may be easier having long fingers, really, any hands will do the job fine.
