A number of things.
1: They're afraid they'll mess up.
2: They aren't very good.
3: Their afraid they over blow and make it crack (clarinet, oboe, bassoon).
The list goes on and on.

I had my first orchestra rehersal at my new church last wed. there was only one teen(not including me) and the rest were adults. I didnt play out alot because I didnt want to leave my first impression that I dont know how to play my flute and clarinet, especially since I was sight reading with 5 flats in the key. So, like me, people dont want to leave a bad impression about them selves, so they dont play out. That is though, that hopefully after they get used to the people there and the people start knowing how well you can actually play then they arent afraid to play out. That is for me.

Those are great. But, there are some people who fixed those problems, and yet they don't really play out for the true music which they really can do. They know how they are supposed to play, but they just can't do it. Is this because they don't really care about music a lot? What do you think?

A friend and I were talking about this last night. I think it really is just a matter of confidence in what you're doing. People are afraid they'll make a mistake and are intimidated by other players around them who do play out, and therefore don't play in anything but the most subdued manner. For oboists especially this is a recipe for disaster.
Unfortunately though, the whole thing becomes a vicious circle. I know personally if I play in a group, and there is someone playing timidly, that in itself leaves a bad impression of their playing in my mind. It's sorta harsh but true: not playing out = playing badly.

Well if they've fixed all the problems with confidence and playing technique, and yet they still don't play out, then I dunno. Perhaps they just don't have much to say with their music? Some people just inherently aren't very musical... though I don't understand why they would want to play an instrument if they weren't.

I liked the one about the vicious circle thing. It really does happen to me too. In the band camp, A person said to me to stop playing (seemed like a joke, but it's a truth) it's because I wasn't supposed to play better than upper classmen. I said I don't really care.
And when we were practicing sectionally, other flutists kind of suddenly get silent sometimes and I hear them sigh. The section leader said geez once on one day. I knew she wasn't saying that badly. Maybe it's because I was kind of great for the flute section.

My sax teacher gave me a great piece of advice..."It's better to play strongly wrong than weakly right"...of course, this doesn't mean blare a super low note loudly while the rest of the band is playing a high note pianissimo...but you get the idea...comes in very handy for jazz improvising especially, because if you play a 'wrong' note loud, the audience will think 'hmmm...that was a strange sounding note...', but they won't see it as a mistake as often if you're confident about it. You're only ever half a step away from a 'right' note.
In my school's concert band, I see both ends of the spectrum....our alto saxophones will NOT play out at all, except for the girl who is first chair. But our flute section plays out and makes CONSTANT mistakes. Of course constant mistakes are annoying, but I'd rather make a few minor mistakes and recover quickly, than not be heard at all.

my band director always says "if you're gonna make a mistake, you need to play loud so that i'll know and can help you" i think it's a good idea, i don't really think that playing low (good or bad) leaves a good impression, might as well have confidence or you'll never make it

Yeah, especially when you are sightreading. I think people usually don't ask their band director when they were wrong for the first time sightreading through a music. And they continually play bad constantly. I hope they ask.

I was first chair flute in band, before I switched to oboe, but when they were first placing people I wounded up third. Everyone was shocked, because the one who got first chair really wasn't all that good, and everyone thought I would get it. At first I just gave up, because I know how badly the person who got first chair played, so I wondered if I was third chair to her, did I really play THAT bad? I started playing quieter and not as loud, because I thought that I must be bad then, and I was really embarassed to play at all! After about a week I got sick of seeing the not-so-good-first-chair-flute gloat, brag, and basically remind me 24/7 that she "beat me". Anyway, I talked to my band director and asked what I could improve on, and there was hardly anything there, so the next day I challenged the first chair and got it. I guess my point is, maybe people are afraid to play out because they just don't like their chair placements. In my band, whoever is last chair will never play out, although they did before placements. They think that if they're last chair or even second, "What's the use of even playing if there will always be people better than me?"

MLS, but most of the people that are last chair are pretty much the people that dont care where they are at seating wise. I have been first chair all through middle school and now high school and I do play out louder than any one else lol. But for some people if they think they are a bad player then they need to take the time to bring their instrument home and practice.

It seems to me that the discussion in this thread boils down to this:
If you don't play out, you're playing wrong.
If you play out and make a mistake, you're wrong.
If you don't play out and make mistakes, you're wrong.
The only way to be right is play out AND not make any mistakes. Sorry that's kind of harsh, but that's life in the music world.

I always play louder when playing sax then flute. Ive played sax for 2 months and flute 6 years. I think its because i just started sax, it feels like im not supposta be good, so its like no pressure. I dont know, this whole topic is getting wierd. New point: When I play piccolo, i feel really exposed and loud. its a really noticable instrument. maybe people are concerned about balance...

in this band i go to they decided to sit us by their favourites which means i'm behind grade fives and sixes so i just stop playng and talk even though i'm about two trhee grades above them it doesn't matter that they'er older or been going longer
the people running it are always complaing but they do the same to all my friends through out the band so what do they expect
