Either 3 half steps down or 6 up....this is because if u play a C on the alto sax it it is actually a concert Eb...hence, Eb alto sax.

if u find the difference of those 2 notes u end up with the whole 3 and 6 steps thingy...its also an easy way to figure out what scale the director is talking about.

And one more answer to your question...the key it would end up is Eb major...BUT thats if the piano music is in C. if not here is what it would be:

Key of Piano Music | Key to play on alto (major scale only)
-----------------------------------------
C | A
C#/Db | A#/Bb
D | B
D#/Eb | C
E | C#/Db

Etc....

another way to do it is to get the piano key...lets say its Ab major...the relative minor of it is F minor....so only on Eb insturments....the key you will play in would be....F major.....WOW!!!!!

Also if the piano music is in a minor...lets say D minor....the key u will have would be the same as D major....WOW again!!!!! (it took me 4 weeks to figure this out, so yes i know im stupid) except on an Eb instrument that would be B minor...but as long as u know your sharps and flats it should be no big of a deal.
