I'm getting a piccolo soon, and I don't know what I should get, metal or wood or plastic. I'm most likly going to be playing it in bands and orchestras, not for marching bands. I'm thinking to get one with the clearest sound, which would be silver I guess, but I honestly don't know much about pics, only flutes.

Don't get silver. Silver is for Marching band. Get wood it has a more mellow and less periceing sound and is more suted and accepted in orchestras and bands.

Hope this helps

I also have a question, since I am also still looking at piccolos. Do you blow into wood piccolos the same as you would for a metal one? And how different is the sound? Thanks.

Yes you do blow into the wood piccolos the same way. The only difference is that there is not lip plate on most wooden piccolos. There is really no difference it just feels weird at first. The metal piccolos have a more brilliant shrill sound than do the wooden or plastic piccolos. This sound is more for marching band. The wooden piccolos have a more mellow sound than the metal ones. This sound is for orchestras and band. The plastic piccolos are kinda stuck in the middle. The are less shril from the metal but more shril from the wooden piccolos. They are used in both marching and orchesra and band. But if you are going to play the piccolo in just orchestra and band then get a wooden one. If you are playing the piccolo also in marching band then a plastic one is find. If you are going to play just in marching band then the metal is the best chois.

Hope this helps.

ok......i have a question!!!
is the fife and piccolo anything near the same??
i can play a fife and i think piccolo would be a good instrument to learn for next year marching season....b/c for actual band, i just play oboe. =( are the fingerings close to the same?? would it be any harder considering fife doesn't have any lip plate or mouth piece?? AND(!!!!) are piccolos very expensive?? Like could I get a good price?? B/c it would probably be JUST for marching season.
Thanks!

The fife fingurings are very different to the piccolos fingurings. Piccolos have lip plates to, it just depends on the one you get. only wooden mouth pices will not have a lip plate. The wooden ones are very expencive. Unless you are going to play piccolo/flute for your main instrument i do not think you should spend the money to get a wood piccolo without a lip plate. And you should also be playing the flute to play the piccolo. I just helps out alot to have the flute down first. Im not sure how similar the fife is to the piccolo in terms of air, embourchue and stuff like that but im sure it is some what similar sice the fife is a pre-histroic piccolo.

Hope this helps

Umm.... I'm looking at piccolos still. But I'm SOOO buggled.... yes, I made up a word. But see, I'm in concert band... but also in Marching Band. I know plastic piccs are the best for people in both... But I do NOT! want a plastic piccolo. So should I get a metal? Would that be an OK sound in a gymnasium during concert time? I'm also thinking of Gemeinhardt (thats my flute brand)

Thankyaz!
