What is the purpose of trills when playing a tenor saxophone? How does a person know how many times a trill is played?

purpose of trills? got no idea, to make a person sweat on performing day because he forgot to play them during rehersal. i'm just joking. to play a trill: 1. find the note with the TR on top. 2. figure out a note that is a tone above. 3. now with knowledge behind you, switch back between both notes really fast. if the note is a quarter note, play for one beat(if in 4/4 time) or if a whole not play for four beats. and you switch back and for fast for all beats you need to, there shouldn't be a specific number of times you trill or that would get really complicated and you'd really sweat come preformance. Just think of bee buzzing around. they buzz, now try to play like that bee buzzing. fast like that. Hope this helps.

In all my piano music all my trills are played as 16th notes. I think that might also apply for band. But over all it really doesnt matter how fast you play them as long as you are playing fast.

Trills on long notes in solos often start slow and accelerate for a more musical effect.
