So what exactly is the difference between English oboe playing and American?

It's mostly a difference in sound. The timbre of an American oboe compared to that of an English oboe is markedly different. This is especially apparent when you hear them live.

Also, English oboes tend to have a wider vibrato on average as compared to their American counterparts, but not always.

There is of course a big difference between American scrape reeds and English oboe reeds which is one of the primary reasons for the difference in tone, as are the different makes of oboe used.

can you give a brief explanation of the differences?
american, english, french
how do they differ?
in terms of tone color?
primary difficulties in playing the different types of reeds?
