 Concert Band to Orchestra
Author: d-oboe

One of my oboe students is complaining that whenever she plays in her school concert band that she always plays terribly. The player is a very competent player, and proves so in lessons. I have this theory that she is trying to play in tune with the no doubt sharp band, making her pinch her notes. Could that be it? It could also be not practicing the concert band pieces, but I don't think that's it. What do y'all think?

hmm... this might be a long shot, but I have two theories. 1) sometimes its hard to hear yourself in a band, and the part might not be something they can do much with, or 2) like all performing stuff you only get one shot and dont get time to go back and perfect the music

the whole band maybe sharp, but it could also be the player. I know somepeople who get incredibly nervous when they play in front of people for a preformance. and some even get nervous when they play in rehearsal, wondering if they're playing in tune or if the accidentals are right. All those things get going through your head you forget somethings like emborchure or key of the music and that could throw you off. or practising music, i know lots of people who struggle to get the 2 hours required in my school band.

i think that she should calm down. i think that she is nervous. if the whole band is in tune and she is a little out it won't make much difference cause the crowd doesn't hear that one oboe. they hear the band. ONE BAND ONE SOUND

Barring her possible lack of practice, I'd say it's both that the band is playing sharp and she can't hear herself. Those seem to be the fundamental problems with playing oboe in a wind ensemble.

I know I personally sound a lot better playing in an orchestra simply because I can hear myself; in a band, even when I'm not absolutely being drowned out, I'm never able to hear as well as in an orchestra. Another factor which ties directly into this may be that she's trying to play too loud because she can't hear herself, and is in so doing losing appropriate control of her air and embouchure. I think that's why I sound worse in a band, and it may be her problem as well.

Well, she came to me today, and she told me she pulled out her tuner and the band was playing 10 cents sharp! No wonder she was having a hell of a time playing. I think another thing is, the band tunes when they aren't really warm at all, and they when they begin to play, and get warm, up goes the pitch. Agh...stupid school bands...
